BALLIE - BAIL(L)IE. Scotland in the 14th century. Due to the unpopularity of

the name "Balliol" and to escape the "tenderness" of the English king, after

King John II Balliol of Scotland was defeated by the English and following the

loss of the kingdom of Scotland from King Edward I Balliol, mid XIVth century,

to Bruce, many decided to change their name. This gave rise to "Ballie"

"Baillie" - "Bailie" and other spelling and phonetic variants, as was the case in

Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Germany.

Note:

As we have seen previously, some people not bearing a patronymic listed on this page may be granted, under special conditions, the access to our Dynastic Knight Order called “Ordo Balliolensis”, the Latin version for “Ordre de Balliol (Bailleul-Belle) !

People belonging to very old families which shared with us important historical moments of the past, are evidently very welcome to join our Order.
